Zolmitriptan Description
Zolmitriptan is a generic tablet that helps relieve migraine symptoms when they happen.
It helps narrow the blood vessels in your brain that expand during migraines, which are believed to trigger symptoms.
Zolmitriptan can noticeably ease symptoms in as little as one hour.

What is Zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan is a generic tablet used to treat migraine symptoms. Migraines are moderate to severe headaches that may come with nausea and heightened sensitivity to light and sound.

This medicine is part of a group known as 'triptans', which are approved specifically for treating migraine headaches, not tension headaches or other types of pain. You should only take them when you begin to notice symptoms, rather than regularly to try to prevent or lessen the number of migraines you have.

How does Zolmitriptan work?

The exact cause of migraine headaches isn't completely known, but it is believed that your symptoms may result from a temporary widening of the blood vessels in your brain. This can sometimes be triggered by factors like stress, fatigue, or certain foods and drinks. Some people also experience a 'warning' sign before a migraine begins, such as seeing small bright spots, flashes of light, or feeling a tingling sensation in their hands and face. This is known as an aura.

Zolmitriptan is used to treat migraines, whether they come with or without an aura. It works by attaching to serotonin receptors in your brain, which helps reduce the swelling of blood vessels and blocks pain signals.

What doses of Zolmitriptan are there?

Zolmitriptan comes in two doses: 2.5mg and 5mg. Our clinician will advise you on the best dose for you, considering your health needs.

How long does it take Zolmitriptan to work?

Zolmitriptan tends to work swiftly. Many individuals notice a significant reduction in symptoms within an hour of taking it.

If your symptoms persist after taking Zolmitriptan, wait at least two hours before taking another tablet. If you often find that Zolmitriptan isn't effective in easing your symptoms, have a chat with our clinician. You may need to consider a different treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Zolmitriptan?

Taking more Zolmitriptan than your doctor has prescribed can be harmful. If you've accidentally taken an extra dose, get medical advice immediately.
