Zovirax Description
Zovirax is a treatment for cold sores that comes in either a cream or tablet form.
It contains aciclovir, which helps reduce sores and swelling on your skin.
The type you’re given will depend on how severe your symptoms are.

What is Zovirax?

Zovirax is available as a cream or tablets and is used to reduce the visible symptoms of herpes, helping you achieve clear and comfortable skin. While it doesn't cure the herpes virus, it can help heal the sores that appear during an outbreak and speed up recovery.

The cream is applied to help treat cold sores, which typically appear on the face or mouth. On the other hand, the tablets are more often used for treating genital herpes. They can lessen the severity of an outbreak and also reduce how often outbreaks occur.

How does Zovirax work?

The active ingredient in Zovirax is aciclovir, which is commonly used to treat cold sores and genital herpes. Aciclovir works by stopping the virus from replicating its DNA, which helps to heal the visible sores and reduce swelling. It also helps to prevent future outbreaks and lowers the risk of the virus spreading to other areas of your body.

What doses of Zovirax are there?

Zovirax comes in various doses, tailored to the type and severity of your herpes outbreak. Our clinicians can discuss the most suitable treatment and dosage for your condition. The available doses are:

Zovirax 200mg tablets – A single dose of the tablet is available
Zovirax Cream 200mg / 5ml – Each bottle holds 125ml
Zorivax Cream 0.05 – This cream contains 5% aciclovir and comes in either 2g or 10g tubes.

How long does it take Zovirax to work?

The time it takes for Zovirax to start working can differ, depending on how severe your herpes outbreak is. You should see results within five days of starting your treatment. If your outbreak continues beyond this period despite taking the medication, it's best to contact our clinician for further advice.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Zovirax?

If you accidentally use Zovirax cream or tablets incorrectly, here's what you can do:

1
If you forget to take a dose of Zovirax tablets, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed one. Never take two doses at the same time.
2
If you accidentally take too many Zovirax tablets, get emergency medical help to find out what to do next.
3
If you forget to use your Zovirax cream, just apply it as you normally would, up to five times a day.

How is Zovirax different from other treatments for herpes?

Aciclovir, the main ingredient in Zovirax, is a widely used treatment for herpes. Other alternatives work in a similar manner, but not all of them are available as both creams and tablets like Zovirax.

How effective is Zovirax?

Which version of Zovirax should I use?

Do I need a prescription for Zovirax?

Yes, Zovirax requires a prescription, so initially, a clinician will need to ensure it's safe and appropriate for you by reviewing your health history.

Our clinical team is here to assist you in selecting the right medication for your needs, whether you're seeking treatment for cold sores or genital herpes.

Is Zovirax similar to any other treatments?

Zovirax is a popular brand that uses aciclovir to treat herpes outbreaks. You can also get aciclovir without the brand name, and it works just as effectively. However, the packaging and look of the medicine might be different.

Opting for a generic version is generally more affordable than Zovirax. However, some individuals prefer to use the brand name due to personal preference. Ultimately, it's down to personal choice.
